Earlier in the year, when Harry turned 5, I documented his whole birthday from start to finish. I mean, its not every day you turn 5, right? The idea was to capture the day as naturally as possible, no pressure or time frame or direction. Simply to freeze a whole day that was just his. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was to change the way I shoot forever, and took my business in a whole new direction, right at a time when I needed it the most. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, that I decided to do the same for the girls and have each day printed in book. I hope that it will give my kids something to treasure when they’re grown, and remind them how much they were loved.
Lily Grace is my middle friend. Her and Harry are mistaken for twins on a daily basis. In her own environment, she is loud, funny, clever and feisty. Away from her comfort zone, she is painfully shy, quiet and reserved.
Here’s what she likes: Tinkerbell and all the Friends that live in Pixie Hollow and surrounding areas. Carrots. Being first in any line, doesn’t matter what its for. Eating more weetbix than Harry.
Here’s what she doesn’t like: Daddy Long legs in the shower. Green Ants. Cane toads. Capsicum. Dog poo of any description.
She wants desperately to want to start Kindy next year, but is absolutely terrified, to the point of nightmares. We have to talk about it everyday. Her BFF’s name is Keeley. She only wears clothes and shoes because I make her. She hates her hair being brushed, so throws every brush in the bin. This means I buy at least one a week. She tells me every time she farts or burps, not giggling or trying to be funny, but in a matter of fact way, like I need to be informed to get through the day. She broke her arm earlier in the year and we didn’t know for 2 days because she’s tough and rarely complains. Our cats love her the most, and she reminds the other kids of this whenever she gets the chance. She has a bad habit of telling fibs when she thinks she’s going to get in trouble. Don’t even bother talking to her when she’s watching TV, because she simply won’t answer you. She wants to have a picnic everyday. She almost always has a wedgie. She sucks her thumb and plays with her belly button when she’s tired. Her and Harry are inseparable, but I worry that he speaks for her too much. She has so much love to give that sometimes I think she’s going to explode if she doesn’t kiss someone!
When she’s happy she says that “there’s a smiley face where my heart is”.
Some days when I look at her, I feel so incredibly overcome with pride. And although I’m sad that its all going way to fast, I’m also excited to see her life unfold. I know anything and everything she choses to do will be with passion and with love.
My funny little friend, who gets lost somewhere between her clever brother and her cute “steal the show” sister. But between you and I? I think it will be Lily Bear that changes the world.
Every single day she puts a smiley face where my heart is.
There was a hiccup in the day when she got in trouble for drawing on the wall in her room with a texta and was roused on.
Then we found out it was most likely someone else that was the culprit.
Her and I headed out to pick up some things for her party that afternoon. Its pretty rare that we get to do these sorts of things just the two of us. But then she was roused on again for throwing her shoes out of the car before we drove out of the drive way. I didn’t realise, of course, until we were already at the shops!
Back home and there was a birthday card in the letter box. Do you remember how exciting it was to get mail when you were this little?!
Helping to decorate her cake. Poor Harry wasn’t allowed to do much, although all he really wanted to do was wear the pink apron. She finally let him.
All she asked for for 6 months was a surprise party. It didn’t matter how many times we tried to explain to her what a surprise party was, in the end we just told her that the party she knew was happening, was in fact, a surprise party.
As it turned out, at the last minute Ben organised a water slide jumping castle for her through his work, and it was indeed a big surprise party after all.
Her cake. Tinkerbell and Friends, of course. And Yes. I made it. I know, right?!
Happy 4th Birthday, Lily Bear, my beautiful little fairy.
